Amazon Product Photo Requirements (2026 Guide)
Get your images right and keep your listing live
Amazon is strict about images, and for good reason: consistent photos make the whole marketplace easier to shop. The catch is that if your main image breaks the rules, Amazon can suppress your listing, meaning it simply stops showing until you fix it. This guide lays out exactly what Amazon requires in plain English, so you can prepare compliant images the first time. At British Muses in London, every white-background shoot we deliver is built to meet these standards.
The main image rules
Your main image is the one customers see in search results, and it has the tightest rules. It must sit on a pure white background, which Amazon defines precisely as RGB 255, 255, 255. Off-white, cream or light grey can trigger automatic suppression, so 'roughly white' isn't good enough. The product should fill around 85% or more of the frame, so it's clearly visible as a thumbnail. There can be no text, logos, watermarks, borders, graphics or inset images on the main image, and it must show the actual product you're selling, not a drawing or placeholder. Props and accessories that aren't part of the purchase aren't allowed in the main shot either.

Image size and file requirements
Size matters for Amazon's zoom feature. Your image needs to be at least 1,000 pixels on the longest side for zoom to switch on, and Amazon recommends 2,000 pixels or more for a crisp zoom that helps customers buy. The preferred file format is JPEG, though PNG, TIFF and non-animated GIF are accepted, with a maximum file size of 10MB. As a rule of thumb, shoot and supply high resolution, you can always size down, but you can't add detail back.
Secondary images are your selling space
Only the main image must be pure white. Your additional images, and you can usually add several, are where you actually sell. Use them to show the product from different angles, demonstrate it in use, highlight key features or ingredients, and give a sense of scale. Infographic-style secondary images that call out benefits work well here, as do lifestyle shots that help customers picture owning the product. This is also where A+ Content, if you're brand registered, lets you tell a richer visual story further down the listing.
Amazon Image Rules in Detail
What gets a listing suppressed
The most common reasons images cause problems are a background that isn't pure white, a main image with text, logos or watermarks, a product that's too small in the frame, or an image below the minimum resolution. Listings can also be flagged for showing props or extra items in the main shot, or for images that don't match the product. The fix is always the same: replace the offending image with a compliant one, and the listing returns. Getting it right at the shoot stage saves that whole headache.
A quick pre-upload checklist
Before you upload, run through the essentials. Is the main background pure RGB 255, 255, 255 white? Does the product fill about 85% of the frame? Is the main image free of any text, logo, watermark or prop? Is the image at least 1,000 pixels, ideally 2,000-plus, on the longest side? Is it a JPEG under 10MB? Do your secondary images show angles, features, scale and use? Tick all of those and your listing is on solid ground.
Getting compliant images without the stress
You can create white backgrounds yourself with editing software, but it's fiddly to get a truly pure, even white and a clean edge on every product. A professional shoot bakes compliance in from the start: correct background, correct framing, correct resolution, with retouching and colour correction included. At British Muses, our white-background photography meets Amazon's specification as standard, and we deliver your secondary angle, detail and lifestyle shots in the same session.
